Preventing bacteria from falling in with the wrong crowd could help stop gum disease

Stripping some mouth bacteria of their access key to gangs of other pathogenic oral bacteria could help prevent gum disease and tooth loss. The study suggests that this bacterial access key could be a drug target for people who are at high risk of developing gum disease.

Dental Marketing News: Google Reviews Not Showing Up

If you’ve taken the time (and had the courage) to ask patients to go out of their way to post a review for your dental practice on Google, you may be disappointed. While we’ve had some client dentists say that their Google reviews were missing for a year, then reappeared, others report that their reviews simply do not show up. The problem seems to be growing. A quick search reveals, missing Google reviews are frustrating business owners across all industries. This can be a serious hindrance in dental marketing.

Why Google Reviews Disappear

Google troubleshooters are looking for answers to the problem, but the company does not yet appear to reason for the missing reviews. A few key factors may influence reviews being filtered out and unpublished. These include, but are not limited to: duplicate business listings; reviews posted prior to the Google+ Local launch (a few months ago); the sorting of reviews, as selected in a dropdown menu by the reader; a review having a URLs (not allowed); or Google marked the review as spam. Unfortunately, Google does not share the criteria for spammy reviews, so you cannot know whether this is the cause of your problem — or how to fix it.

Here’s Google’s review posting policy.

Where Are the Missing Google Reviews?

If your review posters (patients) did not follow the above policy, your review may be in a holding tank. The reviewer can amend the review and republish. Google says that if a review is edited to meet the guidelines, and it is not considered spam (for unknown reasons), it could become public immediately.

What Can a Dentist Do to Help Google Fix the Review Issues?

One Google forum says, “For Google to investigate, it would be helpful for them to know the URL of your profile, as well as the URL of the Google+ Local/Business page that you are trying to leave a review for.” So, they are suggesting that the reviewer report the problem, but as a marketing professional, I can tell you, the reviewers don’t care. They’ve done due diligence by creating a review, and life goes on. The business owners, or dentists in our case, become frustrated and disenchanted with Google reviews as a viable dental marketing tool.

Businesses, including dental practices, can visit this forum on missing Google reviews to report missing reviews.

Should Dentists Continue to Ask Patients for Reviews?

YES! But don’t ask your patients to post Google reviews. This advice is completely counter to what I’ve recommended for a dental marketing strategy in the past. I’ve always advised that dentists play the Google game and soothe the Google beast. For now, until the lost-in-cyberspace Google reviews issue is resolved, I suggest that a doctor just ask patients to submit reviews via email or in print. The testimonials can then be published on the doctor’s website. Don’t rely on Facebook reviews or Yelp! as a replacement, either. Both of these companies change their tactics regularly, which frustrates business owners.

If you don’t rely on Google Local reviews, your map rank may not be as high as your competitors, but you also won’t lose those rave reviews from your patients. This strategy won’t work in Texas. The TDA does not like dentists to use testimonials in advertising. Texas dentists may be wise to use a service like Demandforce or ZocDoc to gather and publish reviews on their behalf. This seems to be a loophole. If I hear differently, I’ll certainly write a blog about it!

One More Google Review Issue to Consider

If Google only publishes a few negative reviews about your practice, your maps listing may rank high. However, this means that the first impression of your brand on a potential patient will be negative reviews — not good. Be sure to respond to all negative reviews on your Google+ Local listing. Respond with compassion and empathy, not haste and emotion. Our copywriters can create a response for you to review, if you’re an MDPM client.

Foods That Whiten Teeth

Foods That Whiten TeethDid you know that there are certain foods that will whiten your teeth over a period of time?

Celery, apples, and carrots

Crunchy fruits and vegatables stimulate saliva production. The gentle abrasive action actually scrubs your teeth too.

Broccoli

Remember when you were told to eat that broccoli? Maybe you should have listened! Broccoli is not only rich in antioxidants, but it also adds an acid-resistant film to your teeth that protects the enamel. A laboratory in Brazil has found that this “bath” may cut erosion from sodas in half!

Oranges and pineapples

When you eat tart fruits, your saliva glands go into overdrive. If you rub the white side of an orange peel on your teeth, it helps to brighten your smile.

Strawberries

Strawberries don’t stain your teeth like other brightly colored berries. The seeds also provide a natural scrubbing agent. Try mixing mashed-up strawberries with baking powder to make your own toothpaste!

Apple cider vinegar

If you can stomach swishing this in your mouth, apple cider vinegar is a great stain remover.

Shiitake mushrooms

A sugar in Shiitake mushrooms called lentinan helps prevent bacteria from forming plaque in the mouth. Less plaque means less tooth decay.

Sesame seeds and almonds

The AACD states that sesame seeds act as scrubbers and provide calcium for strong and healthy teeth. Almonds are good scrubbers as well.

Books are in Transition

Not that I think "real," paper books are going away entirely, anytime soon. But there will be less of them, and more digital books. The fact is, Beauty from Afar is one of those works that would have been better as an e-book, in some future time of e-book ubiquity.

Ten Interesting Facts About the Dentist’s Drill

Dental Drill Water Spray

1 - There are two main types of dental drills: the high-speed and the slow-speed.  The high-speed drill rotates around 250,000 RPM.  That means it spins around more than 4,000 times each second!

Even the relatively slow dental drill rotates at about 8,000 RPM.  By comparison, this DeWalt Drill is three times slower with a top speed of 2,500 RPM.

2 - After using the dental drill on your tooth for 30 seconds, your dentist is subjected to as much bacteria as they would be had you sneezed right in their face (Source).  That's one of the reasons most dentists wear face masks.

3  - The high-speed dental drill shoots out water as it spins, as you can see in the photo above.  If it didn't, the friction would cause your tooth to get so hot during a filling that it could possibly damage the nerve inside your tooth.

Diamond Coated Dental Drill Bit

4 - Many dentists now refer to the dental drill as a handpiece to make it seem more friendly and enticing.

5 - The dental drill has to withstand the rigors of sterilization after every use, which means it gets heated to 250° Fahrenheit with pressurized steam for at least 15 minutes.

6 - The very first dental drill appears to have been a bow drill used by an ancient civilization about 9,000 years ago.

7 - The drill bits that dentists use are made of tungsten-carbide.  Some have blades to cut teeth, like in the photo below, and others are coated with diamonds to give a sandpaper-like smoothing effect (see photo above).

Carbide Dental Burs with Cutting Blades

8 - As recently as the early 20th century, many dentists used drills that were powered by a pedal that the dentist would pump with his foot.

9 - The distinct shrill sound that the high-speed dental drill makes can be a major factor in people's fear of the dentist.  Even for those who don't have dental fear, the dental drill's noise can be very unpleasant.

10 - Dental drills can be expensive, with many costing over $1,000.  That's a lot more expensive than your average home-improvement drill.

Questions?

Do you have any questions about the dental drill?  Want to share an experience you've had with the dentist's drill?  Leave a comment below.  Thanks for reading!

Smoking-related diabetes a modifiable risk factor

Cigarette smoking is a modifiable risk factor for impaired insulin secretion in Japanese men, show study findings. In a study of 1199 men without diabetes, impaired insulin secretion, or insulin resistance at baseline, the risk for impaired insulin secretion was increased twofold in current smokers compared with never smokers, report Akiko Morimoto (Osaka University, Japan) and colleagues. However, ex-smokers were not at an increased risk for impaired insulin secretion, suggesting that cigarette smoking is a modifiable risk factor that could be targeted for the prevention of Type 2 diabetes.

Dental Marketing: Is ZocDoc a Wise Investment?

Today I received an email from one of our client dentists in Pennsylvania. He wanted to know whether ZocDoc is a good investment. Since www.zocdoc.com is a type of dental marketing service, I thought I’d do some research and present my analysis and recommendation here on the MDPM blog. If you’ve had experience with ZocDoc and would like to share it with MDPM readers, please comment on our Facebook page.

What is ZocDoc?

ZocDoc is an online appointment-setting service for healthcare professionals. It primarily helps doctors fill empty appointments in their schedule. Physicians, dentists, and specialists can list their practices and profile on the ZocDoc website. Patients can find a doctor, make an appointment online, and leave a review. To sign up, you fill out a form online, and a ZocDoc representative calls you. On ThisWeekIn.com, in an interview with Cyrus Massoumi (see below), the inventor of ZocDoc, I learned that ZocDoc started by serving dentists.

A listing includes information about a practice and the dentist’s education, as well as available appointments, and patients can simply book online. In addition, dentists can have an appointment button on their website that sends potential patients to ZocDoc to book. ZocDoc does not replace other dental marketing, so a website and SEO is still extremely important. ZocDoc is simply an addition to a good marketing strategy.

What Does ZocDoc Cost?

At the time of the video, the cost was a flat fee of $250 per month, but it’s now $300 per month. The cost covers unlimited patient numbers.

Does ZocDoc Have Good Reviews from Dentists?

The online reviews I found for ZocDoc are from patients reviewing doctors, not doctors reviewing ZocDoc. Those patients who posted previews gave it a thumbs up, for the most part. However, ZocDoc kicked off with a huge marketing campaign, and there’s no way to tell if the reviews were paid or real. These days, we have to take that into consideration, though I have no reason to believe the reviews to be fake. So, consumers give ZocDoc a nod. According to the company’s website, nearly two million patients use the service to book appointments 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Is ZocDoc Right for Dentists?

I think it depends on the dentist. Dentists who accept insurance, have a high cancellation rate, have great SEO (so their practice is found online), and who like emergency patients may be well served with ZocDoc. Currently, ZocDoc has between 3-4 million open appointments.

Software Integration: ZocDoc does work with many of the appointment software that dentists use, so available appointments are kept up to date and reflected immediately on ZocDoc. Therefore, if a patient cancels, another can book that appointment through ZocDoc immediately.

Reviews & Reputation Management: Patients who book through ZocDoc and show up for their appointments are sent an email to post a review about their experience. Like other patient communication programs that use this model, fake reviews are limited or non-existent. If a doctor who uses ZocDoc gets a bad review, it will be posted. The only way to eliminate the post is to stop using ZocDoc. That said, in this day and age, I think a so-so or poor review now and then is good for dental marketing; it gives the positive reviews more credibility.

Dental Marketing with ZocDoc: Not a Replacement for SEO

ZocDoc is not a replacement for a dental website, blog, microsites, and search engine optimization. It is a supplement that can target filling empty appointments. Your current patients who want to see you as soon as possible can do so via ZocDoc. This means, your staff does not have to call a long list of waiting patients; the patient can just visit your dental website, click on the “book an appointment” button, and claim the open appointments in your schedule. To rank high on Google, dentists must have a website that is well optimized. In competitive markets, dentists also need blogs, microsites, and a social networking plan. Modern Dental Practice Marketing helps provides dental marketing consultations, as well as all the Internet and print marketing tools a dentist needs to build a thriving practice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im-tGqDPxwo

Note: In the above video, Cyrus Massoumi said that the company does not discuss profits, but the interviewer did some quick math and threw out a guesstimate that the company makes over 3 million per month profit, with a staff of only 100. Wow. ZocDocy began in 2007, and the video was recorded in 2011. Could a company grow that fast if it had a bad product? I doubt it. However, we have to wait and see if ZocDoc can handle their exponential growth! So far, so good.

Gene expression profiles of mandible reveal features of both calvarial and ulnar bones in the adult rat

There were relatively few differences in the expression of genes responsible for the bone formation process per se in different functional skeletal sites. Differential transcription factor expression suggests that it is the regulation of bone formation and not the mechanism of bone formation itself that differs between the skeletal sites. Clinical Significance: The mandible has areas both prone to, and resistant to, resorption whilst skull and limb bone differ in their susceptibilities to osteopenia. This report reveals that the mandible shares some genetic pathways in common with calvaria and others in common with ulna. Study of these pathways could identify novel treatment strategies for bone preservation.

Do I Need a Filling? Many people wonder why their dentist tells them that they need a filling.  Although having a cavity is the #1 reason we do fillings, there are also many other reasons that people get fillings.

Why You Need a Filling

1 - Cavities

Cavities remain the number one reason that dentists give patients fillings.  Even so, not all cavities need fillings.  Sometimes very small cavities can be "watched."  When this happens, the dentist monitors the cavity and if it appears to be repairing itself, you won't need to get a filling.

I'd like to add a word of caution: Only leave a cavity unfilled if your dentist has recommended that your cavity should be watched.  Putting off necessary dental work can complicate your dental health and increase your costs.

2 - Tooth Fracture

Many times, fractured teeth can be repaired with white composite filling material.  You can take a look at a tooth that I repaired with a white composite filling before I started working with real patients in dental school.

Prevent your teeth from fracturing by wearing a mouth guard during these 16 activities.

3 - A Slow Loss of Tooth Structure

When you fracture your tooth, you lose a lot of tooth structure quickly.  There are other ways that you can lose tooth structure more slowly, such as abrasion, abfraction, erosion, and attrition.  You can learn about those in the article about the four ways you wear away tooth structure.

The best way to prevent this type of tooth loss is by avoiding acidic drinks and acidic candy, not grinding your teeth, and not using your teeth as tools.

4 - Tooth Discoloration

Another reason that dentists do fillings is to cover up discolored teeth.  Teeth can be discolored for a variety of reasons, such as staining from antibiotics and dental fluorosis.

5 - Replacing Old Fillings

Old fillings may need to be replaced.  Over time, white fillings can discolor and the bond between the filling and the tooth can break down.  Silver fillings may also fracture after many years of service.  One of the first fillings I did in dental school (unbeknownst to my patient!) was the replacement of a silver amalgam filling that had fractured.
