The bad news first – you’ve been diagnosed with periodontal disease, usually referred to as gum disease. The good news? This can often be treated successfully without surgery.
Most of the time, the first step is nonsurgical. You’re given a good cleaning, called scaling and root planing. This removes plaque and tarter deposits on the teeth and root surfaces. This helps to heal gum tissue and periodontal pockets to shrink. Often times, this is called “periodontal cleaning” or “periodontal maintenance.”
You may also be prescribed medications to help control infection and pain or to help the healing process. This medications may be in pill form, mouthwash or a substance that the dentist inserts into the periodontal pocket.
These nonsurgical methods usually take care of the issue, but if the problem continues or the supporting bone is lost, you may need a surgical treatment.
