Google Authorship: Scaling Back Search Results

shutterstock_184093721If you haven’t already heard, Google is moving towards optimizing its user’s experience (UX) for the mobile device. They believe that in the near future mobile devices will take the top spot in accessing the Google search engine. What does this mean for desktop or tablet users? Not much more than being coerced to catch up with the times and start using your iPhone or Android mobile device to search for cute kitten videos or the most recent Chive photos. Nonetheless, Google has officially confirmed its removal of Google+ profile images and circle counts from the search engine results page (SERP). One can assume this change will create a more satisfying UX, but what does it mean for sites that rely on Search Engine Optimization?

Content Is King

Various studies have shown that an image next to a search result will gain more click-throughs than a search result without an image. Most users would agree and can attest to this statement. So what does that mean for the Google+ authorship crowd who use their profile to identify as a contributor to a specific page?

Authorship doesn’t change. The search result presentation has changed. Those that claim authorship over a batch of content will still benefit from doing so. The old adage with Google still stands true: Content Is King. Sites that already focus on SEO are being commended for their contribution. The sites that have been branding powerhouses without much focus on SEO are being encouraged to focus on original content.

How Content Really Works

Companies spend millions of dollars and countless hours spamming their brand to establish a presence. That’s great for word of mouth, but for Google search results, it does nothing. The most recent update has nullified the “branding” advantage in accordance to the SERP. What does this mean for all the small businesses, boutiques, and Ma and Pa stores with an internet presence? It means the same as before, but more now than ever: Content comes first. A site with original, organic content helps drive that site’s SEO ranking towards the first page in Google search results.

Google is concerned with UX, which means if you have original content, that content is claimed under a Google+ authorship profile, and you consistently attract visitors, you will be noticed.
